Residents in 3 area municipalities to cast votes
Staff report

Voters will head to the polls today in three area municipalities.

A pending South Carolina Supreme Court decision on whether James Island can continue to operate as a town won't stop residents from casting votes for mayor and Town Council.

In St. George, two candidates will vie for a seat on Town Council.

Meanwhile, six candidates are vying for three council seats in St. Stephen.

Robert Kline is challenging incumbent Mayor Mary Clark on James Island. Incumbents Joe Qualey, Bill "Cubby" Wilder, Parris Williams and Bill Woolsey are all up for re-election against challengers Alice Abrams and Carol Jacobsen.

James Island precincts 6-10 and 15 will vote at Fire Station No. 1, 1622 Camp Road; precincts 5a, 5b, 11-14 and 17 will vote at Fire Station No. 2, 853 Harbor View Road; precincts 19, 20 and 22 will vote at Fire Station No. 3, 78 Plymouth Ave.; precincts 1a and 3 and Folly Beach precinct 2 will vote at Fire Station No. 4, 1833 Folly Road.

The town of James Island was first formed in 1993 but was dissolved in 1997 after a city of Charleston lawsuit successfully challenged the town's borders. The town later re-established itself, and a current suit by the city of Charleston challenges the town's constitutionality.

Clarine Barton and Kirstie Axson Scharf are seeking the District 1 seat in St. George left vacant by the resignation of Regina Baxter. Barton works at Citizens Bank, and Scharf works at S.C. Bank and Trust.

Votes will be cast at the St. George Fire Department on Ridge Street. The district has about 600 voters, according to St. George Town Administrator Marie Behling.

Candidates for St. Stephen Town Council include incumbent council members John Rivers and Willie Gamble. The remaining candidates are Ora Blanding, Christine Brown, Louis Brown, and the Rev. Roderick Sumpter.

Voting in that election will take place at the American Legion Hut on Ravenell Street.

Polls in all three towns are open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
