Self-Determination
I read with great dismay that my Charleston City Councilwoman, Anne Francis Bleeker, asked state lawmakers to reject legislation that would allow citizens of James Island to decide for themselves what is in their best interest on the grounds that "this is a direct effort for the third time to introduce legislation that is terrible public policy."
It is terrible policy for the city of Charleston to tell people that they cannot have control over what is in their best interest.
This country was founded on the belief that citizens should be able to determine for themselves how they are governed.
For Joe Riley to think he knows better that the citizens of James Island what is best for them because he thinks Charleston needs their tax dollars is patently un-American.
